The holding company of the Fuchs Gruppe is DF World Of Spices GmbH. The largest shareholder is the non-profit Dieter Fuchs Stiftung. This shareholder structure ensures that revenues generated remain largely within the company and can be invested long-term for its future viability.
The history of our company is undoubtedly also the history of one man. Today we would say, Dieter Fuchs founded a successful start-up in Lower Saxony in 1952. He was also a “typical” entrepreneur of the post-war period: an all-rounder with vision, a pioneering spirit, hard-working and with a strong will to succeed.
The history of the Fuchs Gruppe begins in a small rented room in Dissen am Teutoburger Wald in Lower Saxony with three employees. Back then, every single customer was still supplied personally and with dedication by Dieter Fuchs on foot and by bicycle.
A convenient dispensing mechanism and optimum preservation of quality and flavours:
The decorative box was introduced to the trade, thus following a trend towards supplying spices in boxes and glass containers instead of bags. Incidentally, even though the visual appearance has been adapted to the times, the core functionality is still the same today. The jars are also manufactured in our own plastics production facility in Schönbrunn.
Dieter Fuchs divided the company into two business units, for customers from the food retail and industrial sectors respectively. Essentially, this structure still exists today, with the two business units, Retail and Industry.
The whole diversity of spices and herbs at a glance: The first Fuchs spice shelf for supermarket chains is launched. To this day, the shelves for supermarkets are manufactured in our own joinery in Melle at the retailers’ request.
Our motto is: We can make a difference on location! Wherever our raw materials are grown, we are there. Dieter Fuchs already recognised this early on: The key to success lies in the growing regions. He already began to build up today’s activities by founding the Tropoc pepper purchasing company in Brazil as early as 1973.
The opening of the first international distribution location in France (Fuchs Epices) paved the way for the Fuchs Gruppe’s development in international sales markets.
The nineteen-nineties were also characterised by international expansion: Baltimore Spice (later Fuchs North America) was established in the USA, the Fuchs Gruppe’s first international industrial location. Expansion to Brazil in the shape of Fuchs Gewürze do Brasil followed as early as 1991.
An acute challenge in the cultivation of peppers led to the establishment of another site in Brazil in 1991: Fuchs Agro Brasil. Onions and garlic also needed to be procured and processed via our own separate location. In 1996, a purchasing office was founded in Shanghai with this aim in mind, as well as Fuchs China Foodstuffs in 1999. Today, the site is among the largest in the Fuchs Gruppe.
Inclusion of Ostmann, the best-known German spice brand, into the Fuchs Gruppe. Further spice brands followed; Ubena (2000) and Wagner (2003). In 2006, the range for end-customers was expanded to encompass delicatessen products from the international specialities world: Bamboo Garden, Fuego and Kattus are now also part of the range.
The foundation of Fuchs Condimente Romania laid the cornerstone to enable a direct service to the Eastern European market. With its Cosmin brand, the company is now the leader in the Romanian market.
The portfolio of international consumer brands is growing, and additional international markets are being served with customised offerings: Ubena Alimentari is founded in Italy (2014), followed by the acquisition of Bart Ingredients in the UK (2017).
In response to a raw materials market characterised by ever new challenges, the Fuchs Gruppe established a branch in Cambodia in 2017 as a further location for the purchase of pepper.
The Fuchs shareholder group re-acquired the minority stake in the Fuchs Gruppe held by the Paulig Group for over 20 years, with economic effect from 1 January 2023. The non-profit Dieter Fuchs Stiftung with 90 per cent of the company shares remains the largest shareholder.
The foundation of Fuchs Malaysia not only lays the foundation for getting to know the Malaysian market better, but also for establishing a presence in South East Asia.
